The Basics

What Are Black Windows?

“Black windows” means windows with black frames: black on the outside, on the inside, or both. Most black windows in Ontario are vinyl, with the colour added at the factory.

How the black is made matters more than the colour itself. Good black vinyl uses a factory foil laminate or a co-extruded acrylic cap that reflects part of the sun's heat. Sprayed paint on a white frame is the version that fades and warps.

At WindowFixers.ca we install custom ENERGY STAR vinyl windows in black outside with white inside, or black on both sides, in every style.

Pros and Cons

Why People Choose Black Windows

Instant Curb Appeal

Black frames give a crisp outline that makes brick, stone and siding look sharper and more current.

Frames the View

From inside, a dark frame fades into the background so your eye goes to the yard, not the window.

Suits Many Styles

Modern, farmhouse, traditional brick and new builds all wear black well when the rest of the trim fits.

Choice of Inside Colour

Pick black outside and white inside to keep rooms bright, or black on both sides for a bolder look.

Same Energy Rating

Colour does not change how well the window insulates. The glass and frame design do that.

No Painting

A factory foil or co-extruded cap holds its colour, so there is nothing to scrape or repaint.

Honest Downsides

The Disadvantages of Black Windows

What to know before you commit.

Costs more

Expect roughly 10–20% more for black outside and 20–35% more for black on both sides, compared with white.

Runs hotter in sun

A dark frame gets much hotter than white in summer sun. Only buy black vinyl made for dark colours.

Shows dust and spots

Pollen, dust and hard-water spots stand out more on black than on white frames.

Cheap black fades

Sprayed paint or low-grade film can turn chalky grey within a few summers.

Longer wait

Coloured windows are often made to order, so lead times can be a few weeks longer than white.

Not right for every house

On some heritage homes or houses with lots of white trim, black can look out of place. Picture it first.

Prices

How Much Do Black Windows Cost?

Supplied and installed, retrofit, standard sizes, double pane Low-E glass. The white column is our own pricing. The black columns add the typical 10–20% and 20–35% colour upgrade, so treat them as estimates. Your written quote shows the exact price.

10 windows, black outside

$6,600–$16,800

Black on the 4 front windows only

$6,250–$15,100

Putting black only on the street-facing windows is a popular way to get the look for less. Full-frame replacement adds roughly 25%.

Outside only or both sides

Black on both sides is the biggest colour upgrade. Black outside with white inside costs less.

Size and style

Large, tall and opening windows cost more than small fixed ones in any colour.

Retrofit or full-frame

Full-frame replacement, needed when the old frame is rotten, adds roughly 25%.

Glass and grilles

Triple pane, laminated glass and black grilles between the glass all add to the price.

Will It Suit My House?

Black Windows on Ontario Homes

Black works on far more houses than people expect, including classic red brick. What makes it look right is the details around it: capping, eavestroughs and the front door.

Find your exterior below. Not sure? Hold a black sample against the brick at our free measure and see it in daylight.

Your exteriorBlack windows?Tip
Red brickWorks wellBlack reads as classic. Match black or dark bronze capping, and keep white only on the porch or soffits if you have it.
Buff or yellow brickWorks very wellStrong, clean contrast. Black eavestroughs and a black or dark door tie it together.
Grey stone or stone veneerWorks very wellA modern look. Keep metal accents (lights, railings) black too.
White or light sidingBest contrastThe modern farmhouse look. Black on every elevation looks most finished.
Dark grey or navy sidingSubtleBlack blends in for a quiet, tone-on-tone look. Consider bronze if you want the frames to show.
StuccoWorks wellSlim black casement and picture combos look clean on light stucco.
Heritage or character homeCheck firstSome heritage districts have colour rules. Dark green, brown or white may suit the period better.

Finish the Look

Capping and trim

Match the aluminum capping around each window to the frame colour, or it will look unfinished.

Eavestroughs and soffits

Black or dark eavestroughs make black windows look planned, not added on.

Front door and garage

A black or dark front door ties the windows together. The garage door can stay neutral.

Grilles and hardware

Black grilles between the glass and black cranks or locks finish the look up close.

Heat, Warping and Fading

Do Black Windows Hold Up in Ontario?

A black frame in full summer sun gets much hotter than a white one. Standard white vinyl is not made for that heat, which is why painted windows bow and stick.

Vinyl made for dark colours handles it with a heat-reflective finish and steel reinforcement in wide sashes. Winter is not the problem: a quality black window handles -25°C nights the same as white.

The sun is strongest on south and west walls, so plan those first.

Bright living room with white walls and large black-framed picture and casement windows looking onto a snowy yard
Where the window isWhat to plan
North or east wallsLowest sun load. Any quality black window is fine here.
South wallsStrong sun most of the year. Choose a frame made for dark colours with steel reinforcement on wide sashes.
West wallsHot late-afternoon sun in summer. Same as south, and consider Low-E glass tuned for sun control.
Big picture windows and patio-size unitsLong frames move more with heat. Ask about reinforcement and expansion gaps, and follow the maker's size limits for dark colours.

Room too warm in summer? The glass makes the difference, not the frame colour. See our energy efficient windows guide.

Fact Check

Claims You'll Hear, Checked

Black windows attract strong opinions. Here is what holds up.

The claimWhat is actually true
"Black vinyl windows warp."Cheap or painted ones can. Black vinyl made for dark colours, with a heat-reflective finish and reinforcement where needed, holds its shape in Ontario summers.
"They fade in five years."Sprayed paint often does. Factory foil and co-extruded caps are made to resist fading for many years. Ask how long the colour warranty lasts.
"Black windows make the house hotter."The frame gets warm, but the frame is a small part of the window. Room heat comes mostly through the glass, so the glass choice matters far more than the colour.
"They raise your energy bill."No real difference. A black window with the same glass and frame design has the same energy rating as a white one.
"It's a fad that will date your house."Black and dark frames have been common for over a decade and are now a standard choice. Black outside with white inside is the safest long-term pick.
"Just paint your white windows black."Dark paint makes a white vinyl frame run much hotter than it was made for. It can warp the frame and usually voids the warranty.

Before You Buy

Ask These 6 Questions Before You Sign

The answers tell you whether a black window will still look good in 15 years.

  • How is the black made: factory foil, co-extruded cap or paint? (Avoid paint.)
  • Is the colour warranty in writing, and for how many years?
  • Is this frame rated for dark colours, and is it reinforced on wide sashes?
  • Will the exterior capping and trim be the same black as the frames?
  • What colour is the inside, and are the hardware and grilles black or white?
  • How long is the lead time for black compared with white?

Care

Keep Black Frames Looking New

Wash gently

Use warm water, mild dish soap and a soft cloth. A quick wipe in spring and fall keeps black looking deep.

Skip harsh cleaners

No abrasive pads, solvents or strong ammonia on the frame. They can dull the finish.

Dry the spots

Wipe off sprinkler and rain spots before they dry. Hard-water marks show more on black.

Never paint over it

Do not paint the frames a darker or different colour. It can overheat the vinyl and void the warranty.
