The Basics

What Are Fiberglass Windows?

A fiberglass window has a frame made from long glass fibres bonded in resin and pulled through a die into shape. In Canada you will also see it spelled fibreglass.

The big selling point is stability. The frame grows and shrinks with heat at about the same rate as the glass it holds, and it is much stiffer than vinyl. That makes it a strong choice for large windows and dark colours in strong sun.

Full disclosure: at WindowFixers.ca we install custom vinyl windows, not fiberglass. This guide gives you the honest picture, including when fiberglass really is worth the extra money.

Advantages

What Fiberglass Does Well

The real strengths, without the sales talk.

Very Stable Frame

Fiberglass grows and shrinks with heat at about the same rate as glass, so there is less stress on the glass seal through hot summers and -25°C nights.

Stiff and Strong

The frame is far stiffer than vinyl, so it resists sagging and bowing on large or tall windows.

Slimmer Frames

Because it is stiff, the frame can be narrower, which shows a bit more glass on each window.

Dark Colours Hold Up

Black, bronze and other dark factory finishes handle strong sun well, and many fiberglass frames can be repainted later.

Good Insulator

Fiberglass does not conduct cold like metal. With good glass it easily meets ENERGY STAR levels for Ontario.

Long Life

Well-made fiberglass frames commonly last 30–40 years. The sealed glass inside still wears out on its own schedule.

Honest Downsides

The Disadvantages of Fiberglass Windows

Most guides list price and stop there. These are the things Ontario homeowners run into in real life.

Higher price

Expect to pay roughly 20–40% more than a comparable vinyl window, and more for custom colours and sizes.

Few installers and suppliers

Most Canadian replacement windows are vinyl. Fewer companies sell and install fiberglass, so you have fewer quotes to compare.

Longer wait

Many fiberglass windows are made to order with longer lead times than stock vinyl lines.

Fewer styles in some lines

Casement, awning and picture are common. Sliders, shapes and some bay sizes may be limited or cost more.

Parts and service

If the maker or installer stops serving your area, finding a sash, hardware or warranty help can be harder.

The glass matters more

Most of a window's energy rating comes from the glass. A fiberglass frame with basic glass can rate worse than vinyl with Low-E and argon.

Side by Side

Fiberglass vs Vinyl vs Aluminum vs Wood

Each frame material has a place. Fiberglass and vinyl both insulate very well. Fiberglass wins on stiffness and stability; vinyl wins on price, choice and easy service.

Typical values for Ontario homes. Prices are supplied and installed for a standard casement. For a deeper price breakdown, read our blog post vinyl vs fiberglass windows: what the price difference buys.

Prices

How Much Do Fiberglass Windows Cost?

Supplied and installed, retrofit, standard sizes, double pane Low-E glass. The vinyl column is our own pricing. We do not sell fiberglass, so that column shows typical ranges published by GTA fiberglass sellers in 2026.

WindowVinyl (our price)Fiberglass (typical GTA)
Casement or awning$500–$1,000About $900–$1,800
Single or double hung$500–$1,000About $900–$1,800
Slider$450–$950About $850–$1,600

10 standard windows$6,000–$14,000About $9,000–$20,000

Large architectural fiberglass units can cost several thousand dollars each. Full-frame replacement adds roughly 25% in either material.

Size and style

Large, tall and opening windows cost more than small fixed ones in any material.

Retrofit or full-frame

Full-frame replacement, needed when the old frame is rotten, adds roughly 25%.

Colour and finish

Dark or two-tone colours and wood-look interiors add to the base price.

Glass package

Low-E, argon, triple pane and laminated glass change the price more than many people expect.

Fact Check

Claims You Will Hear, Checked

Fiberglass ads and vinyl ads both stretch the truth. Here is what holds up.

The claimWhat is actually true
"Fiberglass is 8 times stronger than vinyl."It is much stiffer, which helps big windows. But a well-made, reinforced vinyl window is plenty strong for normal home sizes. Strength alone does not make a warmer or quieter window.
"Fiberglass windows last 50+ years."Frames can last a long time, but 30–40 years is the realistic range most makers support. The sealed glass usually needs replacing after about 15–25 years in any frame.
"Fiberglass is far more energy efficient."Both frames insulate well. The glass (Low-E, argon, double or triple) sets most of the rating. Compare the U-factor on the label, not the frame material.
"You can paint fiberglass any colour."Many fiberglass frames accept paint, but most come with a factory finish that is not meant to be painted soon. Check the maker's rules before you plan on it.
"Vinyl windows warp in Canadian winters."Cheap, thin vinyl can. A quality multi-chamber vinyl frame, sized right and installed square, handles Ontario winters for decades. Very dark colours on big sunny walls are where fiberglass has a real edge.

The glass makes the biggest difference to comfort. See our energy efficient windows guide and, for cold or noisy walls, triple pane windows.

Your Decision

Who Should Choose Fiberglass, and When Vinyl Is Smarter

Fiberglass makes sense if…

  • You want black or another dark colour on large, sunny windows.
  • You have very tall or wide windows where frame stiffness really matters.
  • You plan to stay in the house 20+ years and the budget allows the premium.
  • You found a local fiberglass installer with a strong service record.

Vinyl is the smarter buy if…

  • You want the best comfort and efficiency per dollar.
  • Your windows are normal home sizes and mostly white or light colours.
  • You want more quotes, shorter wait times and easy parts and service.
  • You would rather spend the difference on better glass, like triple pane on cold walls.

Skip fiberglass if the only reason is a sales promise of big energy savings. Better glass does more for your bill.

The Alternative

Get the Fiberglass Look With Vinyl

Many people want fiberglass for the slim, dark, modern look. Custom vinyl gets close for less. See our custom windows options.

Dark exterior colours

Vinyl windows can have black, bronze or grey exteriors with a white inside, for the modern look many people want from fiberglass.

Slim casement profiles

Casement and picture windows have the slimmest vinyl frames and show the most glass.

Reinforced frames

Metal reinforcement in large vinyl sashes adds stiffness where it is needed.

Better glass

Low-E, argon and warm-edge spacers come standard. Add triple pane where a wall is cold or noisy.
