The Basics

What Is a Slider Window?

A slider window has one or two sashes that slide left and right on a track. Nothing cranks or swings out, so it opens easily and stays out of the way.

Toronto has a lot of homes built for sliders: post-war bungalows with wide, low windows, 1970s and 80s houses that came with aluminum sliders, and almost every basement. Swapping those for new vinyl sliders keeps the look and fixes the drafts.

At WindowFixers.ca we build custom ENERGY STAR vinyl sliders to your exact sizes and install them with our own crews across Toronto. New to sliders in general? See our slider windows overview.

Types

Types of Slider Windows

Five kinds of slider, and where each one fits. For a deeper look at the first two, read single vs double slider windows.

TypeHow it opensBest forGood to know
Single sliderOne sash slides, the other stays fixedMost bedrooms, kitchens and living roomsThe most common and lowest-cost slider.
Double sliderBoth sashes slide left and rightWide openings, rooms where you want air from either sideBoth sashes tilt or lift out, so both sides are easy to clean from inside.
End-vent (3-lite) sliderFixed centre pane with a sliding sash at each endVery wide living-room and family-room openingsBig clear view in the middle, fresh air at both ends.
Lift-out sliderSash slides, then lifts out of the track for cleaningBasements and smaller openingsSimple and budget-friendly. Ask for anti-lift blocks so it can't be lifted out from outside.

Pros and Cons

Why Toronto Homeowners Choose Sliders

Opens Without Swinging

The sash slides along a track, so nothing sticks out into a walkway, deck or narrow side yard.

Good Value

Fewer moving parts than a crank window, so a slider is often the lowest-cost opening window per size.

Wide, Low Views

Sliders suit wide openings that are shorter than they are tall, which is common in Toronto bungalows and basements.

Few Parts to Break

No crank, gears or hinges. Rollers and a lock are the only moving parts.

Easy to Reach

Just push the sash sideways. Handy over a kitchen counter or behind furniture where a crank is awkward.

Same ENERGY STAR Glass

You get the same Low-E argon double or triple pane glass as any other style.

Honest Downsides

The Disadvantages of Slider Windows

What to know before you choose a slider.

Only Half Opens

On a single or double slider, at most about half the window area can be open at one time.

Seals Are Not as Tight

Sliders seal with brush-type weatherstrip, not a compressed gasket. A good one is fine, but a casement seals tighter.

Tracks Need Cleaning

Dirt and grit collect in the bottom track. Left alone, the sash gets stiff and the drain holes clog.

Centre Rail in the View

The meeting rail where the two sashes overlap runs down the middle of the glass.

Not for Tall, Narrow Openings

For openings taller than they are wide, a hung or casement window works and looks better.

Toronto Homes

Are Sliders Right for Your Toronto Home?

It depends mostly on the shape of the opening. Sliders suit openings wider than they are tall. Toronto's bungalows, split-levels and basements have plenty of those.

Tall, narrow openings in older semis usually look and work better as hung or casement windows. Find your home type below.

Century semis and Victorians (Riverdale, Leslieville, The Annex, Cabbagetown)SometimesTall, narrow openings usually suit hung windows better. Sliders fit well on rear additions, kitchens and side walls.
Post-war bungalows (Etobicoke, Scarborough, North York, East York)Great fitWide, low openings were often built for sliders. A direct style match keeps the original look.
1960s–1990s two-storeys and back-splits (Don Mills, Willowdale, Agincourt)Great fitMany came with aluminum sliders. Vinyl sliders in the same openings are a simple, tidy upgrade.

Placement

Where Slider Windows Work Best

Room by room and spot by spot. For basement-specific advice, see our basement windows page.

Over the Kitchen Counter

You can reach across the sink and slide the sash open with one hand. No crank to stretch for.

Beside a Walkway or Deck

Nothing swings out to catch heads, chairs or the barbecue.

Narrow Side Yards

Toronto houses often sit a few feet apart. A slider opens without hitting the fence or the house next door.

Bedrooms

A good choice for wide bedroom windows. Size it right if the window must also serve as an emergency exit.

Basements

Short, wide openings in window wells are a natural fit. Keep the well clear and drained.

Wide, Low Openings

Any opening wider than it is tall. For tall, narrow openings, pick hung or casement instead.

Drafts and Seals

Do Slider Windows Let in Drafts?

Honest answer: a slider doesn't seal quite as tightly as a casement. A casement presses against a rubber gasket when it closes. A slider glides past brush-type weatherstrip.

That gap matters far less than the quality of the window. A well-built slider with the four features below is snug through a Toronto winter. A cheap one with a single brush strip and a loose lock is what gives sliders a drafty name.

Bright Toronto kitchen with a wide white vinyl slider window above the sink, looking onto the backyard

Double Brush Weatherstrip

Two rows of pile with a thin fin inside block more air than a single row. Ask what the window uses.

Interlocking Meeting Rail

Where the sashes overlap, they should hook together when locked, not just touch.

Cam Locks That Pull Tight

A good lock pulls the sashes together as it closes. Two locks on wide sliders.

Drain (Weep) Holes

Small slots in the bottom track let rain out. Keep them clear or water can sit in the track.

Safety and Permits

Egress and Toronto Permits

Two things people often miss when choosing a slider for a bedroom.

Bedroom Exit Rules

Ontario's Building Code wants most bedrooms, including basement bedrooms, to have a window big enough to climb out of in a fire. On a slider, only the sliding half counts, so the window must be wide enough.

Basement Bedrooms

This is where sliders most often fall short. We measure the clear opening and tell you if a casement, a wider slider or a bigger opening is needed.

Do You Need a Permit?

Swapping a window in the same opening of a house is usually treated as a repair. Making an opening bigger, or work in a condo or multi-unit building, can need a permit or approval. Check with the City of Toronto for your home.

Care

Keep Your Sliders Gliding

Vacuum the Track

Twice a year, vacuum grit out of the bottom track, then wipe it with a damp cloth.

Clear the Drain Holes

Poke a pipe cleaner through the weep holes so rain drains out.

Silicone, Not Oil

A light spray of silicone on the track keeps the sash gliding. Oil and grease attract dirt.

Check the Rollers

If a sash drags, the rollers may be worn or full of grit. They are easy and cheap to replace.

Installation

Retrofit or Full-Frame?

Retrofit (Insert)

We keep the old frame if it is solid, slide the new slider in, insulate and cap the outside. Faster and cheaper. Most Toronto jobs are done this way.

Full-Frame

We remove everything down to the rough opening. Best when the old frame is rotten, or when you want to change the size. Adds roughly 25%.
